Craft lessons: Waldorf Finger Knitted Flowers, video tutorial

Fingerknitted Flowers

One thing I would love to have in my house is live plants or better yet, fresh flowers, but with two kitties it's just not an option. So, I had to improvise...

A bouquet of cat and kid friendly, all natural, homemade flowers. I found a video tutorial
They were quick and easy to make - I simply fingerknitted the flowers and sewed them onto the branches from our wool tree.

We have been eating in the park, on the beach, and at concerts a lot this summer and needed some non-plastic reusable snack bags.

I know I am a little behind the curve on this, but with the girls being homeschooled, this food packing stuff hasn't been a big issue—no lunches to pack everyday and all that. Of course, we have to carry our food in something. Food folded up in cloth napkins in a wicker basket doesn't always cut it—you know what I mean? It's all cool to play Little House Old-Timey Lunch until a sandwich falls in bark dust.

So, after dorking around this morning I made some cloth baggies. These were so easy and fun I made a little tutorial for them. There's no velcro on these—super easy. All you need is a sewing machine and some fabric. Here's a link to it if for some reason the player below is busted.

Craft lesson: crochet a flower video tutorial

how to crochet a flower video tutorial

One thing I love about crocheting is that there are so many ways you can use it to create embellishments. From decorative edging to flowers, you can dress up a t-shirt or a scrapbook page with your hook and just a little yarn. Lately I've been obsessed with crocheting little flowers--maybe because they're so quick and satisfying! I altered a few other flowers I'd tried and came up with my favorite 5-petal flower pattern. I'm sure I didn't invent it, but it came about for me by trial and error and it turns out cute with almost any kind of yarn. Here are a few items I've made recently with flowers.

If you want to make your own, we've made a short video tutorial to show you just how to do it. I'm a visual learner, so I know some of you out there just need to see it done once to figure it out. Check it out, then find the written pattern below. WARNING: This is not a general crochet lesson. You'll need to know how to do a few basic stitches to complete a flower.

It's a bigger picture, but the picture and sound quality aren't as good.

Mandy's Favorite 5-Petal Flower Pattern

Materials:
Any size hook (depending on what size flower you want)
Any weight yarn

Rnd 1: Ch 5, join into a ring w/sl st in 1st ch.
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 9dc in ring, join to top of ch w/sl st -- 10 sts.
Rnd 3: **Ch 2, work 3dc in next st, ch 2, sl st in next st** five times. Fasten off.

For a different color center, try changing yarn colors after round 2. Experiment with different weight yarns and hook sizes. To layer a slightly smaller flower on top, go down one hook size from larger flower.

Tape lace - a fairly simple and very nice reception crochet. The essence of his knitting - is to create bands that have followed, both vertically and horizontally, sometimes on the diagonal. They are then fastened together.

Joining the band as you can lace tape by simply stitching the inside out, and tying the gaps between bands.

2088078048_b5290f914a_z (500x378, 227Kb)

This pattern uses front post double crochet (fpdc) as well as back post double crochet (bpdc) There are several good tutorials online of how to complete these stiches, as well as Youtube videos that will walk you through them. It is expected that you know these stitches and are comfortable with them before beginning the pattern.

Items Needed:
150 yards WW yarn (more yardage will be needed for a longer hat)

J hook for body
H hook for ribbing

Gauge:3 dc with J hook=1" Height isn't important because you can just add on rounds

To join each round: join with slip stitch around the first front post double crochet of previous round (or beginning ch 2 of the first round), ch 2, then fpdc down into the same front post double crochet you just did the slip stitch to (again, this will be a ch 2 for the beginning round). This pushes the ch 2 behind the fpdc you just made (ignore the ch 2, it doesn't exist). This isn't necessary, but it looks better than a standard ch2 and makes the join less obvious.

With J hook

1. 15 dc in Adjustable Ring
2. Fpdc in every dc (15)
3. Fpdc in every fpdc, dc in the space between fpdcs (15 fpdc, 15 dc)
4. Fpdc in every fpdc, dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 dc)
5. Fpdc in every fpdc, 2 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 2dc)
6. Fpdc in every fpdc, 2 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 2dc)
7. Fpdc in every fpdc, 3 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 3dc)
8. Fpdc in every fpdc, 3 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 3dc)
9. Fpdc in every fpdc, 3 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 3dc)
10. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
11. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
12. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
13. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
14. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
15. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)
16. Fpdc in every fpdc, 4 dc in the first space between fpdc and dc (15 fpdc, 15 4dc)

Switch to H hook

17. Sc around (75)
18. Dc Around (75 sts)
19. Fpdc in one st, bpdc in the next, around (75 sts)
20. Fpdc in one st, bpdc in the next, around (75 sts)
21. Fpdc in one st, bpdc in the next, around (75 sts)

Preemie Version 4.5" tall and 5" across the base (note: that is the measurement while laying flat, not the circumfrence!)
This preemie version pattern was created by Donnetta Johnson (Ravelry id: smileynetta)
I love this version, it's just like a miniature of the original!
Thanks for the pattern Donnetta, and for letting me post it here!

Small amount of Sport Weight yarn

Note: To join each round: join with slip stitch around the first front post double crochet of previous round (or beginning ch 2 of the first round), ch 2, then fpdc down into the same front post double crochet you just did the slip stitch to (again, this will be a ch 2 for the beginning round). Craft lessons: crochet Granny Straps, video tutorial

How To Make Granny Straps

These are the straps I designed for the secret hex bag.  Below are charts, written instructions, and a video.  Plus a bonus alternate two-row version.  Yay!

My suggestion is that you look at the chart, watch the video, and go for it.  If you absolutely must, read the written directions, but they are super-wordy even though the straps are pretty simple to make.

Craft lessons: crochet Granny Straps, video tutorial

Granny Strap Written Directions
Row 1: Make an odd number of foundation single crochet (fsc)  stitches.

Stop making that face ... it's easy!  If you don't believe me, click through to my tutorial and read all the comments that say how happy everyone is that they finally learned to do fsc.  You can do it.  Trust me!!!  My tutorial has a video and step-by-step photos.  And, you can ALWAYS email me.  I bet you'll have it mastered in 10 minutes, tops.

Row 2: Make two single crochet (sc) stitches in the top of the third fsc, chain 1, * skip 1 fsc, 2 sc in next fsc , chain 1 repeat from *  until you get to the last fsc.  In the last fsc make 2 sc (in the top of the fsc), chain 2, 2 sc (in the side/end of the fsc), chain 2, 2 sc (in the bottom of the fsc making sure to catch center bar of fsc so there is no yarn between the 2 sc in the top of the fsc and the 2 sc in the bottom of the fsc), chain 1. Along the bottom of the fsc row * skip 1 fsc, 2 sc in next fsc , chain 1 repeat from *  until you get to the last fsc. In the last fsc make 2 sc, chain 2, 2 sc, chain 2, 2 sc, chain 1. Skip an fsc, 2sc in next fsc, slip stitch to top of first sc of Row 2, pull a loop through the last stitch, cut yarn and pull end through, and tie a square knot on the back of the strap with the beginning and ending yarn ends.

Row 3: In the chain space to the left of the start of row 2, make 2 sc, chain 1, * skip 1 fsc, 2 sc in next fsc , chain 1 repeat from *  until you get to the 2 chain corner.  In the 2 chain corner make 4 sc, chain 1, in the next 2 chain corner, make 4 sc, chain 1. Along the bottom edge * skip 1 fsc, 2 sc in next fsc , chain 1 repeat from *  until you get to the 2 chain corner.  In the 2 chain corner make 4 sc, chain 1, in the next 2 chain corner, make 4 sc, chain 1.  Make 2 sc over the slip stitch that completed Row2 trying to hide the knot, if you can, slip stitch to top of first sc of Row 3, pull a loop through the last stitch, cut yarn and pull end through, and tie a square knot on the back of the strap with the beginning and ending yarn ends.

Finishing: Weave in yarn ends.

ALTERNATE TWO-ROW VERSION OF GRANNY STRAP

Here is a two-row version I used on the phone cozy I made.

Row 1: Make an odd number of foundation single crochet (fsc)  stitches.

Row 2: Start with top of third fsc, make one *single crochet, chain one, skip an fsc, repeat from * until you get to then last fsc.  In the last fsc, sc, chain 1, sc, chain 1, 1 sc to work around the end of the fsc row.  Along the bottom of the sc (be sure to catch the center piece of yarn) chain 1, skip one fsc, *single crochet, chain one, skip an fsc, repeat from * until you get to then last fsc. In the last fsc, sc, chain 1, sc, chain 1, 1 sc to work around the end of the fsc row.  Slip stitch to the first sc.

Feedback welcome and encouraged!
